Influences of temperature, salinity and starvation on the motility and chemotactic response of Vibrio anguillarum.
The role of growth factors for the motility and chemotaxis of the fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum was determined. Cells of V. anguillarum were chemotactic to serine in the temperature range 5-25 degrees C and in 0.8-2.7 % NaCl. The chemotactic response was significantly higher at 25 degrees C than at 5 or 15 degrees C. Growth in medium with 1.5 % NaCl gave a higher response than growth with 3 ...
متن کاملSurvival of Vibrio anguillarum and Vibrio salmonicida at different salinities.
The fish pathogenic bacteria Vibrio anguillarum and V. salmonicida showed the capacity to survive for more than 50 and 14 months, respectively, in seawater microcosms. A salinity of 5% proved lethal to V. anguillarum harvested in the late-exponential growth phase, whereas a salinity of 9% was lethal to the bacterium after it had been starved at a salinity of 30% for 67 days. The lethal salinity...
متن کاملIron Acquisition Strategies of Vibrio anguillarum
The hemorrhagic septicemic disease vibriosis caused by Vibrio anguillarum shows noticeable similarities to invasive septicemia in humans, and in this case, the V. anguillarum-host system has the potential to serve as a model for understanding native eukaryotic host-pathogen interactions. Iron acquisition, as a fierce battle occurring between pathogenic V. anguillarum and the fish host, is a piv...
متن کاملGrowth of Vibrio anguillarum in Salmon Intestinal Mucus.
The physiological changes of Vibrio anguillarum in response to growth in salmon intestinal mucus were investigated. Growth, survival, and changes in protein expression during growth in media supplemented with mucus were compared to growth and starvation in the identical media without mucus. V. anguillarum exhibited a rapid decline in CFU following growth in mucus as the sole carbon source. No s...
متن کاملrRNA gene restriction patterns of Vibrio anguillarum serogroup 0 1
Forty-four strains of Vibrio anguillarum serogroup 0 1 isolated from dead or diseased fish from several, mainly European, countries were selected for rRNA gene restriction pattern analysis. With HindIII, 6 different ribotypes were detected of which 1 profile was dominant with respect to geographical distribution as well as fish species. Also with EcoRI, 6 patterns were found; 1 profile was clea...
